8.12.2012 - my ongoing obsession with t shirts

Well,

Firstly, let me just say congratulations to my lovely friends Josie & Dave, who's daughter was born yesterday! I've very excited for them :)

---

Secondly, I finally added a proper header to my blog which makes me feel like a real blogger now. Phew.

---

Thirdly, tomorrow is my last day of work for almost a month & on Friday (!) my family is arriving, excuse me while I jump for joy.

---

And now for something completely different.

---

I have a deep obsession with t shirts.
I especially love ones from movies or t shows, the nerdier the better.
Since I started selling my photos on RebBubble (buy things from me here!), I've been spending  a lot of time on the site, exploring it.
I've come across about a bajillion shirts I want very much, which since I don't have a heck of a lot to write about today I figured I'd share.

extra points for you if you can identify the origin!

30.11.2012 - finally found out what's wrong

Hey guys,

so I felt a little ill yesterday and then last night I got really really bad again. swollen tonsils, intense nausea, crazy bad headache, backache, stuffed up sinuses, cough, light sensitivity, basically everything hurt terribly.

Went to a new, different doctor who's an English lady at a different clinic. It's much farther from me but I really wanted to be able to explain my symptoms and get some advice because I had what I thought was my third round of tonsillitis in 2 months.

Turns out I never even had tonsillitis, but have had strep throat probably since mid september, which means that at this point I am seriously ill. I'm currently on doctor ordered bed rest for 3 days, she said I much have a pretty serious immune system to have been working and stuff, given how long the virus had been in my throat.
She also gave my 10 days of antibiotics and said the 4 days the other guy gave me where absolutely not enough to kill anything, even if he'd given me ones for strep. Just enough to make me appear healthy, but not enough to fix the problem.

Even though being this sick absolutely blows, I'm really happy I went to her and finally know what's going on and have the right meds to deal with it.

I'm currently downloading seasons 1 through 5 of Doctor Who (the reboot) to keep myself occupied and in bed, stoked to get my David Tennent on, yo!
---

To end this on a much better note: in exactly two weeks I will be seeing my family for the first time in over three months and I am so goddamn excited!

---

I hope you all have a good day and a pleasant tomorrow!

11.09.2012 - yay vegan food.

Sunday

what a life I lead.
I was out from 8.15 until a but past three, at work for most of it and then I stopped by the grocery store to pick up some vital things. Going to a busy shop with low blood sugar makes me buy tons of sweet things, as it turns out.

I'm pitching my new show 'Cooking With a Poor Foreign Girl in Tokyo' to the food network, so we'll see if my life takes a sudden turn for the more food oriented.

Anyway, because of my schedule on Saturdays & Sundays I actually only eat one meal, at like 4.
I know it's not actually a healthy way to eat, and during the week I really do my best to eat three meals a day. But I can't eat less than 2 hours before I'll be doing aikido (that's work or my own training) because then I feel crazy sick. So, it can be a it hard.

Anyway, original point: when I eat on the weekends I make one ridiculously massive meal. Like two meals honestly.

more of those gyoza, steamed with broccoli and mung bean sprouts.

Then I did some laundry, and felt that I had done so well at being an adult I decided to just watch the newest Doctor Who and eat oreos.
Good call on my part, made me feel awesome.
Seriously, often not doing anything makes me feel like just dying, but it made me feel awesome and relaxed today.

Today is also the first day I've not skyped with my family, I feel like it's a big step for me honestly.

----------------------

Monday:
woke up at 5.30, went to the dojo for an hour.
I'd been planning on staying for two, but then after two days in a row with Cesar's crazy's warm ups and my legs felt like jelly. Just biking to and from the dojo made me want to cry.

Came home, ate a massive breakfast (I'm actually just always hungry. I walk so much here that I need to eat so much more, cause you know, that's how it works) and skyped with my family for a while. They're so freaking great. I mean, shit.

Then I went out to submit my application for Japanese Lessons. So I deicide to go to the Shinjuku City Office, as that seems the closet.
Try to go there, end up a the City Health Office.
They send me to the City Office.
City Office information lady says this isn't where I need to be, I need to go to some other building.
Go there.
They send me to the City Office, and tell me I need to go to the second floor.
Go back to the City Office, so up to the second floor and the lady tells me I need to go to a totally different plaza, to the Multicultural Plaza, which is like a 30 minute walk away.
AND IS CLOSED. Luckily I realised this before I walked there.
But I just had to come home and get ready for work, where I have to leave to go in 7 minutes.

So now tomorrow I have to try to squeeze in a trip to the Plaza after work, but before I meet Keiko/go to work again.

In good news I ordered my new hakama today!
for those who don't know, this is where you can learn all about hakamas.
anyway, I have a heavy cotton one, which I love deeply and more than many people.
But, its heavy and all the time it's been spending being carried from school to school is beginning to mess up the pleats. Plus it's super heavy.
So I'm ordering one of the super light polyester blend ones, and it's getting embroidered with my name and everything. That's actually just because all hakamas have that here, but hopefully it'll be here by Friday.

----

Well, went to work, it was really good actually.

Came home and made some food, unfortunately I ended up buying weird gyoza when I got them (since I can't, you know, read the label.) and it had a kind of almost middle eastern flavour? like a little but like falafel? or maybe some artichoke as well?
Not so great.

the noodles were from the grocery store too, I'm obsessed with them.
they have like, pickled carrots and bean spouts and raw cabbage and they're awesome.

-------------------------

Tuesday

Got up, went to work for an hour or so. It was just Cesar and I this morning, and that's one of my favourite classes to teach. Even though it's horribly early.
Really nice conversation with him after too, he's nice.

Came back here, ate a wonderful breakfast (not even being sarcastic, I was really psyched about it) of french bread, peanut butter, banana, and honey. I was cheap and just bought some Skippy's peanut butter, but it's magically too sweet AND too salty at the same time, so next time I will definitely fork out for the organic stuff. Fun fact, right?

Lay down for what was meant to be a 20 minute nap, but I forgot to set my alarm and slept for like, 2 1/2 hours. Oops.
I have absolutely got to submit my language application tomorrow, I need to start lessons asap.

Went and met Keiko for our hour chat, she was nice enough to invite me out for dinner with her family on Saturday. Which is even better than it might be because it's Magnus' birthday so I'll be horribly sad that I'm not with him.

Went to work! good class, Paul and I taught. It was the first class of the year at that school so there were heaps of new faces for me to put names too, haha.

On the way back I stopped and actually bought myself dinner at a vegetarian restaurant called Eat More Greens. So good, jesus I can't stop talking about it.
It had a nice atmosphere, it was all vegetarian or vegan, each dish told me if it had dairy in it, it was cheap, the food was outstanding, I got to eat vegan apple pie…
I could go on forever.

I will definitely be eating there pretty regularly, I walk right past it for two of the places I teach and a third is only about 5 minutes away… so I have plenty of opportunities!
Unfortunately I didn't have my camera, there are a few I snapped with my mobile. Horrid quality I know, but just look how damn nice it was! Ugh perfect food is perfect.

---

Sorry about the lack of photo recently, I don't like taking my camera with me to work so I often don't have it when I see lovely/interesting things.
I wish I had a point and shoot that I could just have in my pocket you know?

here's a bonus selfie, taken while waiting for the metro the other day.

have a pleasant day!

06.09.2012 - Harajuku! and I got really, truly lost for the first time since moving.

Started my day delightfully, slept in and skyped with my family. double good time.

I also felt like a total babe.

I have today off, so I was all set to have an adventure filled day and just post mail and have a grand old time.

I'd been planning on going to the Shibuya Aquarium for the better part of it, because I thought it'd be fun.
But I needed to get money from my Canadian account before I could do that.
I thought you could withdraw from any Seven11, so I went searching. I knew there was one I saw most days but I couldn't remember if I saw it going to hombu or going to work. Opposite directions of course. And I went the wrong way first.
Eventually found it only to have it not let me withdraw my money.
Not really sure why, when my mother wakes up (it's currently 2 in the morning at home) hopefully she'll be able to talk to my bank and make sure my card's alright.

But by the time I'd done my laundry, found a post office, and had my issues with my card it was 2 in the afternoon, which makes it a but late for the aquarium which stops letting people in after 4.30, and closes at 5. It'd probably take my about an hour to get there door to door. And I prefer to have plenty of time for looking at fish, you know?
I have Friday the 14th off too, so I'm thinking then.

Now I'm going to go back to the post office and see if they have an ATM I can use because according to, my best friend, google they often have international ATMs there.
If they do then I can buy the boxes I need and get all the presents sent off today!

--------------------

Oh lord, what an afternoon.

Went to the post office, there ATM turned my down too.
Came back here and got some extra money out of my travel fund (I put some of each pay check in a fund, so next summer I can travel around japan without using all my money from canada. so that I can have that money to travel/do whatever with when I move home. Thinkin' ahead, whaaaat.) and decided to go to Harajuku. I went originally to go to Daiso, which is one of the most famous 100 Yen shops in Tokyo. But then I ended up walking all up and down Takeshita Dori, which is pretty much th shopping street. It's awesome. Unfortunately it started raining a bit when I came out of Daiso so I don't have any more photos, but it was lovely. I also did have an umbrella, which ended up being very very lucky for me.

Most importantly was that yes, I did hum Harajuku Girls by Gwen Stefani quietly to myself over and over the entire time I was there. In fact, it hasn't stopped yet. They do have the wicked style, with wild hair colours, and cellphones.

Picked up a few more presents, plus a badass shirt of a tiger wearing a bow tie for myself.
Because bow ties are cool.

truth.

And even better I stopped by another 7 11 to try their ATM and it worked totally fine. So I don't know what was up earlier, but that made me very pleased.

my obsession with this cat fabric has not waned since London,
there's a very good chance I will own this tote very soon.

But then disaster struck. At this point it's about 4, I figured I had heaps of time to walk back to Harajuku Station, go home, and then go to the dojo for the woman's class at 6. I've been wanting to try out one of the woman's classes, so it seemed perfect.
But then I decided to just nip down a side street to have a look at something.
Well.
I suppose I just turned the wrong direction out of the shop when I exited, but the next thing I know I'm in like, residential Harajuku and it's raining and I have no freaking idea where I am.
I walked around for a while, asked some people for directions. Either they sucked at giving them, I sucked at following them, there was a conspiracy to keep me there forever… something was up.
I finally ended up back in a shopping area but on a totally different street.
Then I ask someone else where the Harajuku Station is and they point me in the direction.
So I walk for a while, and I suppose I must have just turned at the wrong time, because one again I am totally lost. At least there were people around this time. But no one was being helpful to me at all.
It's still raining at this point, I feel I should mention.

Eventually I just turned around because I felt like it and then took my first left, since I was on that side of the street, since I figured I couldn't get more lost. And boom, I'm back on Takeshita Dori. Right where I needed to be.

But by the time I walked back to the station, gotten the train here, and walked back to my house it was 7.30, which meant they were already halfway through the final class of the night at Hombu.
But yes, if you were counting, I was lost for 3 and a half hours.
Ugh.

I'm pretty annoyed that I didn't get to class tonight, I'm going to try doing double class in the morning, so see if I can handle it.
I've been getting much much better with the heat, and I know I can do 2 hours of aikido since I've done it before.

I was also obviously too late to post anything, so I organized everything I'm sending so I can pop them to the post office tomorrow after class/before work.

sorry for the lack of photos, have some good old fashioned arms length self portraits as a treat.

have a pleasant day all!
